
COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of six people being killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, June 26 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, June 28, at midnight.
As of midnight June 28, 2009, 424 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 479 highway deaths in 2008.
Of the 320 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2009, 188 were not wearing seat belts. There have been 19 fatal collisions where the use of seat belts is unknown.
Through midnight June 28, 43 pedestrians, 46 motorcyclists and five bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. The remaining fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of non-motorized vehicles.
These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions reported to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and by the media as of midnight June 28, 2009.
